The ability to create a remarkable life

Too many people surrender to the erroneous belief that the ability to create a remarkable life comes from natural, unteachable traits that belong only to a lucky few—the smart, the fiercely gregarious, and the incredibly talented. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, being able to create a remarkable life is under our control, and it’s a matter of shifting our perspective and changing the way we look at things.

I was recently reading a book about Coco Chanel that really struck me. There is much to learn from this legendary woman who changed the world of Fashion, who brought the universal themes of elegant style, courage, money and success to femininity and living life on your own terms into existence.

To me, Coco Chanel set the first example that the way to create a remarkable life is under our control. She took life by the hand and explored every avenue that interested her, instead of letting it take her by the throat

What I love about Coco Chanel is her willingness to be different and to create different possibilities, no matter what the circumstance.  Even though she was born in a poorhouse to unmarried parents, and was abandoned by her father when she was six years old, Chanel grew up to be a woman who chose to be larger than life. She was willing to function beyond this reality, beyond other peoples' imagination, and beyond anything others ever knew or thought was actually possible. She was the only fashion icon to be named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most Influential people of the 20th Century.

What set Coco Chanel apart from the others was that she was not a follower. Chanel challenged conventional wisdom and totally revolutionized women's fashion. Chanel not only changed silhouettes but also changed how women could move through the world... in her clothing. As a result, she became the queen of fashion. She shows us how powerful a woman can be when she's choosing to be different.

If we truly wish to create a remarkable life we have to be willing to be different. We have to be willing to be something different, do something different, and have something different.

The willingness to be different is so powerful that it can completely alter our performance.
